Many have shared on the social media platform their shock at the expense of a Center Parcs holiday this year as British holidaymakers opt to stay in the UK amid the pandemic.
When Center Parcs chief executive, Martin Dalby, is asked about the pricing structure of the family holiday destination due to open in a Longford forest in less than three months, and why it appears so expensive, he has his answer ready to go. There are lodges available at that price, but if you want stay here for less than quid, you will need to book your mini-break mid-week in mid-winter.
And that is before a single pancake or trip down a zip wire is paid for. The prices at the very highest end are - inevitably - the ones that grab all the headlines. In the UK and more recently in Ireland, there is a perception that a Center Parcs break is an expensive break.
Dalby admits Center Parcs does not offer cheap holidays, but is adamant that what it does offer is great holidays, which create great memories for both adults and children. You can - if you so chose - spend a lot of money in Center Parcs. You can do four or five of the activities on offer each day and pay separately for each one. And you can eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner in one of the 10 restaurants on site, and spend hours at night in the bars or the bowling alley.
Alternatively, you can book a lodge, bring your own food, rent bikes and spend most of your time hanging out with your family in the free sub-tropical swimming pool complex, and the costs will be a lot less than two rooms in an ordinary, mid-priced Irish hotel. Bookings are now open for short breaks from August 16th. Earlier bookings are likely to open soon, as long as Dalby and his team are more confident they can get the doors open on time.
It looks like they are nearly there now. What is striking about the Longford site is how comfortably lived in it already appears. The two, three and four-bedroom lodges have all been placed in woodland previously been planted by Coillte.
While the site is weeks away from opening, it already looks like it has been with us forever. It is also striking how closely the acre resort follows the template laid down in Center Parcs resorts across the UK. Apart from the Irish phone boxes dotted around the place - which will be kitted out with emergency telephones - it could be deep in the heart of middle England.
The main concept of the style of accommodation is that you can save as much money as you want or spend as much as you want when you are there.
There are many benefits to this as you can tell, as a family that has 4 people to feed, 3 times a day and snacks in between, the cost of your holiday all of a sudden is skyrocketing in price. The nature of the resort is also a place where you can snuggle up in your lodge and relax on the sofa just like you would at home. But there is also the option to treat yourself and go out for dinner, whether you want to dress up or go in your clothes from your muddy afternoon walk.
The atmosphere of the resort is very relaxed and friendly which is what makes it so nice in my eyes. If you are really looking to upgrade your stay or make your life easier look at getting a welcome pack , these are food and drinks packages that are delivered to your lodge for your arrival in the resort.
I do however think it is a good thing to remember that you can take your own food, shop at where you like to shop tip go shopping and bring it to the resort with you to save money , get the things you and your family like and enjoy eating in rather than out. If you have ever looked at booking Center Parcs and immediately got put off by the price it was probably because you were looking at the peak time of visiting.
There are some extra activities and special events that are held at Christmas so it might even be worth looking to have a festive fun-filled holiday in December. We have a post on what there is and if visiting for Christmas is worth it. When you are looking to book your accommodation you might want to be flexible with your dates as this can really help you save and get a better price.
If you know you can only go in the month of July, look for the cheapest week. Though if you can avoid school holidays then I would as you will find the price drops significantly. This is where we found our trips to be worth the money as we got a much better rate on the accommodation which brought the price per person down.
We often compare a trip within the UK to a package holiday abroad, somewhere like Spain or Greece to fully compare whether Center Parcs is worth it. As these holidays can be similar in price depending on the time of year etc then you might want to know which you should be putting your money towards.
I chose to pick 2 other holiday destinations that might be where else you would look to go as a family, Butlins in the UK and the other in Spain with TUI. Now it is, of course. I have to confess, I have been to Center Parcs — three times. But my nostalgic reminiscences of its greatness are The first time, I was the only one in our shared, two-family chalet watching the TV when news flashed up that Princess Diana had died.
I had a lovely time on my second trip to Center Parcs, 20 years later, with friends. We even got in a trip to the spa; and had an in-chalet sauna.
