One can dance just one tanda with a girl and they can still express romantic interest. Of course, I support respecting the rules, but one has to be aware what they really mean. So, after all this, can you tell is tango sensual and passionate, is it dirty and promiscuous?
I do not have a definite answer. All I can tell you is that it offers opportunity for people to express themselves. Do you have different opinion? I will be happy to hear about it — you can write it in the comments section bellow. This is a member supported site. You tip your favorite bartender, right? Thank you button. It is just one of origin of Tango which the currnet society would like to conceal for being politically correct.
It is a good picture to say that this Elephant always stands in the room of Tango dancing. Most dancers never daer to talk about this taboo and react like hearing blasphemy if others debate this. And for many dancers this Elephant consciously or unconsciously is their drive to dance Tango — even when communicating like above. Additionally in Covid19 times this Elephant brings them to act irrationally when obsessive continuing the social dancing which negatively supports the pandemic.
In fact, I believe without it tango is not a tango. Tango was invented by men who wanted to approach a woman with romantic intentions. I see so much exclusion of older femal dancer especially beginners or people who cant afford fancy clothes.
Often people are homophobic or I see assaults when man havent their sexual lust under control. I dance because I want to dance. The dark side is the EGO of so many dancers that ruin passion and fun on the dancefloor and make it to a stiff and old-fashioned event. Its not anymore we have grown within our social intelligence.. My husband was travelling to Nebraska and as I am the dancer and not him I looked to see if there were any milongas in Nebraska and found your site and info very Interesting.
My husband is not interested in dancing at all and I always danced and found an AT group locally filled only with couples! Yikes, to say learning was trial by fire is an understatement. I was viewed as a husband stealer when in fact I was only having private and group lessons. Its been 11 years and our group knows my husband and I dance with the men in our group but I am always careful not to flirt or get too close emotionally with those men and I think they feel they are free of the seduction side of the dance.
We are all older people but Ive seen single women act like piranha when at a milonga and honestly it is very scary! In Buenos Aires it was my experience that the rules of engagement were used all the time and couples did not spend the whole night with their own partners but asked others to dance. American dancers want to change all the well known rules to suit themselves so keep writing your thoughts on the dance and sharing with us.
I enjoyed your article very much. Thank you! Un abrazo. I have had the exact same opinion for a very long time, but my words have either fallen on deaf ears or in a sea of hypocrisy. The premise that you can completely detach from tango what Osvaldo Zotto pointed out in the video you cited is -in my opinion- infantile. It was originally played by the European immigrant populations of Argentina, and it continues to be played today all across the world. Originally developed by a German instrument dealer Heinrich Band — , this instrument was originally brought to the Argentina by German and Italian emigrants and sailors in late 19th century.
At first, tango music was closely associated with the underclass , same as the tango dance, but this style of music quickly reached mainstream in Argentina and Uruguay , fueled by the expansion of the dance and arrival of new composers that captured the attention of the general population. The early expansion of tango music was helped a lot by the arrival of tango song La cumparsita" which was composed in in the Uruguay. To this day, Tango music is an important part of the music of Argentina.
The tango dance routines are intimate, passionate and elegant, which has pushed the dancers to dress appropriately. This fashion choice remained popular in tango community, although the arrival of shorter dresses and dresses with openings have given female dances freedom to pick their favorite fashion style.
Modern tango dresses are very sensual - short, have asymmetrical hemlines, are adorned with intricate fringes and crochet decorations, and show cleavage. They can be made both from traditional and modern lycra and stretch fabric materials. As for footwear, women should almost exclusively use high heel tango dance shoes. Many of the dancers also frequently wear accessories such as vests, hats, and suspenders. Tango Salon : refers to the way tango is most often danced on the social dance floor.
It is improvised and can move between a closer and more open dance embrace. The line of dance is strictly respected and travels in an anticlockwise direction. Tango Nuevo : refers to both the use of different musical sounds, including electronic music, and a style of dancing which allows a looser embrace and more freedom of movement. Milonga : the term given to a tango event, an occasion for social dancing, but is also the name given to a faster form of tango. As well as being fun and enjoyable, research indicates that dancing tango has positive effects on fitness and emotional wellbeing, can reduce stress, and is good for the ageing body.
Going backwards is basically a bad idea. Dance in lanes. The outside lane is near the edge of the floor and is usually reserved for the best dancers who keep up a good flow. Men who do not keep up the flow are called "rocks in the stream. No passing on the right, especially on the right of the outside lane -- a favorite pastime of some tangueros. Fill in the space in front of you without tailgating. A favorite trick of stage dancers, pretending to be social dancers at a milonga, is to have lots of room ahead of them so they can yo-yo back and forth, using four times the space of everyone else.
Need space to dance? Time for some Small Space Exploration. Tango is NOT a race! Ask the ladies. They like a dynamic of expressive slowness with faster moments when the music calls for it. The dance floor may look like a racetrack, but it is not.
The person who veers in and out of lanes is by far the most dangerous person on the dance floor. Lady leads, this rule applies to you as well. Dancing and Talking do not mix. No conversations while dancing or even standing near the dance floor. Conversations on the dance floor distract from the music. See " Walkie-Talkie Dancers " for more on this. Safety is not just a man's job: My favorite tangueras often have their eyes closed but they sense a change in my body when danger is near and keep their feet to the ground.
Ladies, if you do not have this psychic ability, open your eyes. Also, never go first onto the dance floor -- that is the man's job for safety reasons. You are not being a wise if you allow him to invite you to walk out into traffic -- in the street or on the dance floor!
Chapter Four: Near the Tables. After a woman or a man has declined a dance, the "body guard" will around with now a secondary job of being his or her bodyguard. Waiting for her to rest as she said she would is just deepening the would or putting pressure on her to dance with a pitiful guy. She does not need a bodyguard.
The same goes for women — just leave if he says "not now. Time-out: Once you have declined a dance with a little white lie , you are in Time-Out. Just like kindergarten. None of this would be happening if the cabeceo had been used. But let's say she says, "No, I am resting. I believe that the time-out is not in force when the "no" does not contain a little white lie. If you do equivocate with something like, "I am resting my feet," it is simply not nice to then go off and dance with someone else.
Some would say that you are in time-out for the tanda after saying no, but follow your sense of kindness.
